God uses the metaphor of “sheep” to illustrate the characteristics of a believer. Sheep are notorious for being vulnerable, weak, helpless, dirty and defenseless and they need a shepherd to guide and guard them (like Christ does with us. But sheep are also known as one of the most useful animals God ever created (wool, meat, milk, lanolin, skins, even manure are all useful).
